Length-Weight Relationship, Condition Factor and Growth Pattern of Oreochromis niloticus of Ekoli Creek Bayelsa State

Abstract

This study investigated the length-weight relationship, growth pattern, and condition factor of Oreochromis niloticus in Ekoli Creek, Bayelsa State, for a period of nine-months (August 2023 – April 2024). A total of 324 specimens were collected monthly from local fishers. Length and weight data were used to compute the length-weight relationship (LWR) using the formula W = aL?, and the condition factor (K) was derived from Fulton’s formula. Results showed that all monthly and overall b-values were less than 3, indicating negative allometric growth across all samples. The b-values ranged from 1.90 (January) to 2.91 (April), with corresponding r² values between 0.78 and 0.96. The condition factor ranged from 1.51 to 1.83, suggesting good overall health of the population. Monthly fluctuations in growth and condition were influenced by environmental and biological factors such as food availability and reproductive cycles. This study highlights the adaptability of Oreochromis niloticus to the Ekoli Creek ecosystem and provides vital data for sustainable fisheries management in the region.
