Depth to Basement Determination Using Pdepth and Source Parameter Imaging of Aeromagnetic Data of Parts of Southern Bida Basin, Nigeria
Abstract
The aeromagnetic data over parts of the southern bida basin, Nigeria, were interpreted by source parameter imaging (SPI) and Pdepth techniques in order to determine the sediment thickness of the area. The data were analyzed and interpreted using Oasis Montaj 8.4. The regional fields were separated from the total magnetic intensity (TMI) fields to obtain the residual fields using first order polynomial fitting. The result of the SPI interpretation revealed depth ranged from 151.6m (shallow magnetic bodies) to 1608.2 m (deep lying magnetic bodies). The depth estimates obtained from the Pdepth technique shows a depth for contact ranged from -81.7 to -1717.8m and dike depth ranged from -270.7 to 1890.2m. The maximum sediment thicknesses obtained from the two interpretation methods are in agreement with each other and the result of this study is useful as a reconnaissance for the hydrocarbon potential of the Southern Bida of Nigeria, before employing more deterministic methods such as seismic and well logging.
