Climate Change Mitigation and Environmental Diplomacy in Nigeria

Abstract

Climate change is a global crisis demanding concerted international action. Climate change refers to significant long-term changes in the global climate. Climate change mitigation has generated enormous professional debate, hence this research. This research explores the critical role of environmental diplomacy in achieving effective climate change mitigation in Nigeria. The specific objectives are: to analyze the key mechanisms and instruments of environmental diplomacy in addressing climate change mitigation; the effectiveness of international climate agreements; the major obstacles to international agreements and propose strategies to enhance climate change mitigation efforts. Questionnaires and interviews were the primary sources of data, presented and analysed using simple mathematical tabulations, percentage distributions to explain the results. The study reveals that climate change has a negative impact and that NDCS are often insufficient to meet climate target. The study concluded that the major obstacles to climate change mitigation are high deforestation rate; and greenhouse house emission. NDC’s contributions are often insufficient to meet climate target. The study recommends among others: Optimizing the use of financial resources, enhancing stakeholders collaboration and integrating climate change considerations into national development.
