Effect of Rice Husk and NPK Fertilizer on Maize Productivity in Yandev, Gboko, Benue State

Abstract

Effect of rice husk manure and NPK fertilizer application on maize productivity in Yandev, Gboko, Benue State were determined. The experiments were carried out at the Teaching and Research Farms of the Akperan Orshi Polytechnic, Yandev (AOPOLY) during the 2024 cropping season. The experimental plots were laid out on cultivated land area of 20 x 20 m2. A total of 12 plots were mapped out and each plot measuring 4 m x 4 m (16 m2) was demarcated by 1m apart as alley ways. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) of four (4) treatment replicated three (3) times. Plots measuring 16 m2 were treated on flat as follows: maize (control), NPK 15:15:15 (300 kg/ha) + maize, rice husk ash (12.5 t/ha) + maize and decomposed rice husk (12.5 t/ha) + maize. The decomposed rice husk and rice husk ash were manually incorporated into the soil to a depth of 10 cm one week before maize were planted. The maize variety Hybrid seed (SUWAN-1-SR) was planted at a spacing of 0.25 m x 0.75 m. Maize plant height was taken at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after planting (WAP). Cob weight, 1000 grain weight and grain weight were taken after harvest. The results show a significant (p<0.05) response in the growth and grain parameters of maize. The higher values of growth and grain parameters of maize were obtained under NPK 15:15:15 followed by rice husk ash and decomposed rice husk manures treated plots compared to the control plots.
