The Architect’s Role in Enhancing Passive Ventilation for User Comfort to Optimize Energy Efficiency in a Four-Star Hotel
Abstract
The increasing demand for energy-efficient buildings that promote occupant comfort has become a focal point in the hospitality industry, especially in regions with challenging climates, such as Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. This study investigates the role of passive ventilation strategies in enhancing indoor comfort and optimizing energy consumption within a 4-star hotel. Passive ventilation harnesses natural environmental forces—wind, buoyancy, and thermal mass—to regulate indoor temperature and air quality, reducing reliance on mechanical systems. By integrating techniques like natural airflow, shading, and thermal mass, passive design minimizes the use of artificial cooling, offering both environmental and economic advantages.
