Promoting Godly Governance in Nigeria through Christian Values: A Theological and Ethical Reflection

Abstract

Nigeria’s persistent challenges of corruption, insecurity, economic inequality, and political instability have raised critical concerns about the ethical foundations of its governance. This paper offers a theological and ethical reflection on the concept of Godly governance as a transformative model for national leadership and public service. Drawing on Christian ethical principles such as justice, integrity, servant leadership, stewardship, and love for neighbor, the paper explores how these values can contribute to shaping a morally grounded and people-centered political culture in Nigeria. Theologically, the paper is rooted in biblical teachings that emphasize righteousness and justice as the foundations of divine governance (cf. Psalm 89:14; Micah 6:8). It examines the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as a model for ethical leadership, advocating for transparency, accountability, and compassion in the exercise of authority. Ethically, the study engages with the works of Christian theologians and ethicists who argue for the integration of faith-based values in public life. It also addresses the role of the Church and Christian leaders in promoting civic responsibility, prophetic engagement, and moral formation in society. In a pluralistic democracy like Nigeria, promoting godly governance does not entail the imposition of religion, but rather the embodiment of universal values rooted in the Christian tradition that enhance the common good. The paper concludes by recommending practical strategies for embedding Christian values in leadership training, political engagement, and civic education. It argues that godly governance is not only possible but necessary for Nigeria’s sustainable development and ethical renewal.
