Evaluation of the Quality of Services at Academic Libraries in Selected Colleges of Education in North Central Nigeria

Abdulkadir Sherifat

Abstract

The study assessed the quality of services provided by academic libraries in selected Colleges of Education across North Central Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey research design, data were gathered from 400 respondents, including students, lecturers, and library staff, across seven institutions. The findings revealed a generally positive perception of physical infrastructure, particularly in terms of cleanliness, seating, and lighting. However, significant deficiencies were noted in basic amenities such as restroom facilities, power supply, and building maintenance. Although users appreciated the availability of reference materials and found library catalog systems easy to use, access to updated resources, digital tools, and reliable internet remained major concerns. Satisfaction was highest with staff support and library orientation programmes, while dissatisfaction was reported in borrowing procedures and user feedback mechanisms. Core challenges identified included inadequate funding, poor ICT infrastructure, and limited institutional support. The study was guided by the SERVQUAL model, which provided a framework to understand the gap between user expectations and service experiences. Based on the findings, the study recommends improvements in funding, digital infrastructure, service processes, and user training to enhance library effectiveness in teacher-training institutions.
