Food Insecurity: The Hungry Face of Climate Change

Ahmed Farida Mohammed; Sabiya Francisca Akucha

Abstract

Climate change is rapidly reshaping global food systems, intensifying food insecurity across both the Global North and South. Rising temperatures, erratic precipitation, extreme weather events, and land degradation are undermining agricultural productivity and destabilizing food access, particularly among marginalized and low-income populations. This paper examines the complex interplay between climate change and food insecurity, drawing on recent empirical studies and cross-regional data to analyze environmental, economic, and social dimensions. It highlights how climate-related disruptions disproportionately affect women, children, indigenous groups, and smallholder farmers, compounding existing structural inequities. The review evaluates current adaptation and mitigation efforts, including climate-smart agriculture, water resource management, and renewable energy integration. It also assesses policy gaps and proposes a holistic, equity-centered framework that integrates sustainable agriculture, community empowerment, and climate resilience. The study emphasizes the urgency of embedding food security into climate policy at all levels to safeguard livelihoods and promote sustainable development in an era of intensifying climate risk.
