Comparative Growth Performance of Soybean Varieties under Field Conditions at Federal Polytechnic Bali Research Farm

Abstract

This study evaluated the growth performance of selected soybean (Glycine max) varieties under field conditions at the Federal Polytechnic Bali Research Farm, Taraba State, Nigeria. Five varieties—TGX1448-2E, TGX1440-1E, TGX1835-10E, TGX1904-6F, and TGX1951-3F—were planted in a randomized complete block design with replications. Growth parameters including number of branches (N.B), number of leaves (N.L), and plant height (P.H) were recorded at six and eight weeks after planting. Results revealed significant variation among varieties in all measured parameters. At eight weeks, TGX1440-1E recorded the highest mean number of leaves (263.4) and plant height (63.86 cm), while TGX1448-2E showed moderate performance. At six weeks, TGX1440-1E and TGX1835-10E exhibited superior early growth in both leaf production and height, whereas TGX1904-6F and TGX1448-2E had comparatively lower values. These findings suggest that TGX1440-1E and TGX1835-10E are promising varieties for enhanced vegetative growth under the agro-ecological conditions of Taraba State. Further research should assess yield performance and adaptability over multiple seasons to guide varietal recommendations for local farmers.
