Repositioning Courtyards as Therapeutic Elements in Patient- Centred Healing Environments: An Adaptive Design Approach for Rehabilitation and Wellness Facilities in Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract

Courtyards have historically played a vital role in healthcare architecture, providing natural light, ventilation, privacy, and psychological comfort qualities that are essential to patient- centred healing environments. Despite their potential, courtyards in many Nigerian rehabilitation facilities remain underutilized and often lack intentional therapeutic design. This study examines how courtyards can be reimagined as adaptive, healing-focused elements in the architectural planning of rehabilitation centres for individuals with cardiac-related musculoskeletal and mental health conditions. By employing a multidisciplinary approach including literature review, spatial analysis of existing facilities, and a design proposal for a rehabilitation centre in Rivers State, Nigeria, the research highlights the benefits of integrating courtyards to improve emotional well-being, spatial flexibility, and patient circulation. It also explores how thoughtful courtyard interventions contribute to better recovery outcomes and a more humane, inclusive approach to care. The study concludes that courtyard-based planning is a critical strategy for advancing the design of responsive, patient-oriented healthcare environments in Nigeria and similar contexts.
