Terrain-Sensitive Resort Architecture: A Case Study Comparison of Taj Rishikesh Resort and Z9 Resort

Davies Emmanuella Jebba, and Arc Paul Bethels Uchenna

Abstract

This article explores terrain-sensitive resort architecture through a comparative analysis of two distinctive case studies: Taj Rishikesh Resort in India and Z9 Resort in Thailand. Both resorts are situated in environmentally sensitive landscapes—Taj on a steep Himalayan slope along the Ganges River, and Z9 on the edge of a calm Thai reservoir. Despite their contrasting contexts and visual languages, each project presents a thoughtful response to the challenges of designing in complex natural terrains. Taj Rishikesh uses terracing, traditional materials, and organic circulation paths to blend with the mountainous terrain and create a culturally rich, immersive experience. Z9 Resort, in contrast, adopts a minimalist approach using lightweight, modular, and elevated or floating structures to preserve the lakeside ecology while delivering a serene, meditative atmosphere. The comparison reveals how strategies such as contour-based planning, passive cooling, orientation, and material selection can shape both aesthetic outcomes and functional performance. The article identifies key design lessons—including letting the site inform layout, prioritizing passive systems, and minimizing ecological disturbance—and offers practical recommendations for future developments in similar contexts. It concludes by arguing that terrain-sensitive architecture is less about rigid techniques and more about adopting a mindset that honors the landscape while enriching the user experience.
