Abstract

Zinc oxide and zinc oxide with stabilized starch as a nano-adsorbents were synthesized and characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray Fluorescence (X-RF) techniques. The adsorption of Cd2+, As3+, Cr6+, Ni2+ and Pb2+ ions from aqueous solution (wastewater) on the zinc oxide and zinc oxide stabilized with starch were studied with variation in contact time, initial concentration of metal ions in solution temperature, and adsorbent dosage. The results showed that the adsorption of the metal ions increased at 25 minutes and reached equilibrium gradually and that Ni2+ and Pb2+ were mostly removed by ZnO and ZnO-SS Nano materials adsorbent with maximum % removal values at 99.2 and 94.2% respectively. The maximum percentage removals of Cd2+, As3+ and Cr6+ were observed at 93.5% 64% and 81.6% respectively for 25ppm, 50ppm, 75ppm and 100ppm respectively.by using 1g/mol for 90mins at pH 6. The starch stabilized zinc oxide gave better percentage removal than the ordinary zinc oxide. This was as a result of more active site available in the zinc stabilized starch that could adsorb the heavy metal ions from the industrial wastewater. The nanoparticles (ZnO and ZnO-SS) were found to be very effective in the removal of metal ions (Cd2+, As3+, Cr6+, Ni2+ and Pb2+) from the industrial wastewater. The isotherms (Langmuir and Freundlich) showed that the adsorption sites remained available at all concentrations until equilibrium was established.
