Investigation of Local Perceptions on Groundwater Depletion and Its Geophysical Implications in Adamawa State

Abstract

Groundwater serves as a vital resource for domestic, agricultural, and industrial needs in Nigeria. However, increasing concerns have emerged regarding its depletion, especially in rural areas where reliance on groundwater is high due to limited surface water availability. This study investigates community perceptions on the causes, effects, and coping strategies related to groundwater depletion in a selected region of northern Nigeria. A survey was conducted involving 120 respondents using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistical analysis was employed to interpret the data. Findings revealed that 79.2% of respondents were aware of groundwater depletion. The major perceived causes were overuse of boreholes (50%), climate change resulting in low rainfall (29.2%), deforestation (12.5%), and poor water management practices (8.3%). The effects noted by respondents included drying of wells, difficulty in farming, and longer distances required to fetch water. In terms of coping strategies, digging deeper wells (41.7%) and buying water from vendors (25%) were commonly adopted, with others resorting to sharing or relocating to access water. These results underscore the urgent need for integrated groundwater management and environmental protection policies at community and government levels. Effective awareness campaigns, reforestation programs, and regulation of borehole drilling are recommended. The study concludes that while communities are aware of the depletion, there is a gap in knowledge and coordinated action toward sustainable water resource management. Bridging this gap through education and policy interventions is crucial to safeguarding groundwater for future generations.
