Frame and Catch Assessment Survey of the Fisheries in the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands

Abstract

The fish resources of the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands(HNW) are extensive. This fishery survey was performed to estimate the fish catch, fishing effort, revenues of fishing and the occurrence of these at a particular period of time.Results obtained showed 31 fish landing sites were recorded with 683 fishermen operating, and a total of 173 canoes observed. Cast net is the most popular gear used in the wetland. An average of 2367 fishes are caught daily, with a mean weight of 1040.1kg. The cichlid fishes are the most abundant in terms of composition. The fisheries structure of HNW is generally primitive, highly artisanal with no single motorised boat. There was limited provision of fish handling and processing facilities. The sizes, number and weight of fish recorded in the wetland is highly encouraging for a developing fishery. While the 38 different species observed is higher than figures reported in other lakes in Nigeria. It was recommended that this frame survey be followed by a more extensive boat activity survey and landings survey in order to determine fishing effort, and catch composition. These surveys will contribute to better management of the fishery of HNW, as the government will be able to manage the wetland based on accurate data. This will enhance further improvement of facilities and services at landing sites by encouraging the State and Local Governments to consider fisheries activities as a revenue generating venture. As a result of which there will be more support for fisheries resources protection, development, research and sustainable management.
