Determining the Compliance of Global System Mobile (GSM) Operators in Siting of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) in Katsina- Ala Township, Benue State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study was carried out to determine the compliance of global system mobile (GSM) operators in siting of base transceiver stations (BTS) in Katsina-ala township, Benue State, Nigeria. The study employed descriptive and geospatial design for the study. A multistage sampling technique was adopted for the study and 28 BTS were sampled for the study. Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and observation checklist titled “Based Transceiver Stations Observation Checklist (BTSOC)” were used for data collection. Data was analyzed using chats, tables, frequency, simple percentage, as well as chi-square statistics. The study found that there was high concentration of BTS erection in Central ward in which MTN, Airtel and GLO having equal BTS of 3 each but Etisalat having just 2 BTS totaling 11 BTS in the central ward. The dominant GSM operator in the study area was MTN with 10 BTS but Airtel and GLO had 7 BTS each with Etisalat having only 4 BTS. It was also evident from the map that there was high concentration of BTS between the coordinates of Latitude 7010'00'' and 7010'30'' as well as Longitude 9010'30''E and 7017'30''E. It has been established that there was significant extent of non-compliance of GSM operators in siting BTS in the study area especially in terms of set-back from major roads. The study concluded that GSM operators in the study area failed to complied with the standard for siting BTS in the study area especially in terms of set-back from major roads. The study recommended that there should be fine for the violators of the set standard so that it will serve as deterrent to other intended offenders.
