The Impact of Landuse Landcover Change on Crop Farmers and Fulani Herdsmen Crisis in Katsina- Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria

Korom, Terna

Abstract

The research examined the impact of spatio-temporal changes in landuse, landcover on crop farmers and Fulani herdsmen crisis in Katsina- Ala Local Government Area of Benue State from 1986-2016. Three Landsat images, Landsat Thematic Map (TM) 1986, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Map Plus (ETM+) 2006 and Operational Land Imager (OLI) 2016 were classified using Maximum Likelihood Classifier. The study used the Error Matrix approach in ArcGIS to assess the accuracy of the classification which revealed 87.18%, 89.32% and 91.6% for 1986, 2006 and 2016 respectively. The result of the classification showed that between 1986 and 2016, water bodies decreased by -10.68km2 (-45.27%) at the rate of -1.51% per annum, pastureland declined by -536.10km2 (-43.79%) with an annual rate of change of -1.46% and forest cover lost -421.78km2 (-59.03%) at an annual rate of -1.97%, on the other hand farmland increased by 885.78km2 (137.99%) at an annual rate of 4.6%, built up area gained 80.41km2 (103.88%) at an annual rate of 3.46% and bare land increased by 2.37km2 (35.01%) at 1.17% annual rate of change. The study found that land use changes resulted in increase in farmlands, bare lands and built-up areas at the detriment of pasture lands, forest cover and water bodies exacerbating the crop farmers and Fulani herdsmen crisis in the study area. The study recommended monitoring and strengthening of urban planning and development control agencies, use of land use land cover maps and enactment of strict legislations to protect, manage and conserve the existing land resources.
