Abstract

Environmental toxicants, including heavy metals, pesticides, air pollutants, and endocrine- disrupting chemicals, pose significant risks to human health by interacting with the genome. This review explores the mechanisms through which these toxicants induce genetic and epigenetic alterations, such as DNA damage, mutations, and changes in gene expression. We discuss the implications for disease susceptibility, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and reproductive issues. By synthesizing current research, this article highlights the need for improved regulatory measures and further studies to mitigate the genomic impacts of environmental exposures.
