Bioremediation: Using Biotechnology to Clean Up Environmental Toxicants

Monday Ayegba, Monday Yusuf, Otaru Abdulrasheed

Abstract

Bioremediation, a biotechnology-driven process, leverages the metabolic capabilities of microorganisms, plants, and enzymes to degrade, transform, or sequester environmental toxicants, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional remediation methods. This review explores the principles, mechanisms, and applications of bioremediation, focusing on its role in addressing pollutants such as hydrocarbons, heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial effluents. Advances in genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology are highlighted, alongside challenges and future prospects. Supported by case studies and empirical data, this study underscores bioremediation’s potential as an eco-friendly solution for environmental restoration.
