Bioremediation Effect of Treatment of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Polluted Soil with Corn Husk Compost
Abstract
Bioremediation through biostimulation of hydrocarbon polluted soil using corn husk compost as bio stimulant was conducted. Hydrocarbon degrading bacteria and fungi in the polluted soil were identified and enumerated. Initial Concentration of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) in the polluted soil was also determined. The concentration of TPH was monitored every 14 days. The results of the chemical characterization of the corn husk compost revealed that pH of the compost was 6.82, Total organic carbon is 8.93 mg/kg, Total Nitrogen is 2.86%, Phosphate is 1.845mg/kg and Potassium is 370.16 mg/kg. Baseline microbial and physicochemical characterization of the hydrocarbon polluted soil were undertaken and the results revealed that pH is 7.66, concentration of Total Nitrogen (TN) is 0.218%, Total Phosphate is 0.172mg/Kg, Total Organic carbon was 5.17 mg/kg, while Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) was 50329.54(ppm). Population of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria (HUF) was 1.14X102 cfu/g and hydrocarbon degrading fungi (HUF) is 86 (sfu/g). Nine Hydrocarbon degrading bacteria species were isolated and identified in the corn husk compost polluted treated soil. These include; Provident sp, Bacillus sp, Clostridium sp, Brevibacillus sp, Staphilococcus sp, Morganella sp, Micrococcus sp, Pseudomonas sp and Paenibacillus sp Hydrocarbon degrading fungi identified include; Penicillium Citrinum, Penicillium brocae, Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus sp, Cladosporium, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium notatum, Kodamaea ohmeri and Mucor sp.
