Surface Facies Analysis and Grain Size Distribution of the Gombe Formation Along Wuro Biriji Stream Section, Gongola Sub-Basin, Northern Benue Trough

Abstract

The primary purpose of studying any facies analysis is to give more detail information of any formation in order to explore and produce petroleum. Petroleum is form in an anoxic environment within the source rock, reserve in a good quality reservoir and trapped. For a reservoir to be good in quality must have a good porosity and permeability. The aim of this research is to determine and interpret the various lithofacies of the sediments of the Gombe formation along Wuro Biriji stream section, through establishing a lithostratigraphic section and granulometric analysis. A fieldwork was carried out at the Gombe formation along Wuro Biriji stream section and lithological section of the area was established and found to be composed of lithologies that are laterally very extensive and have reached an exposed thickness of more than 60m, characterized by certain environment features that resemble a Deltaic Environment that is fluvially dominated. They are lithologically made up of sandstones as the major rock with ten (10) litho-facies and mudstones of three (3) litho-facies. The Sandstones are structurally characterised majorly as trough cross-beds with very small percentage of planar cross beds and some of the sediments bioturbated. Granulometric analysis was carried out in the laboratory of twenty-seven (27) sandstone samples using a sieve analysis technique and the result showed that the grain sizes varied from very coarse grain to fine grain sandstones, moderately well sorted to poorly sorted and skewed to very fine skewed. The result showed in respect of the finding both fieldwork and laboratory work, that the Gombe formation along Wuro Biriji suggest that it was deposited at a deltaic environment and was a river process.
