Pastoral Caregiver’s Intervention for Reducing the Influence of Matrilineal Family Practices on Christian Marriage in Ashanti - Ghana

Abstract

The study examined the Pastoral Caregiver’s Intervention for Reducing the Influence of Matrilineal Family Practices on Christian Marriage in Ashanti-Ghana. There are some misconceptions regarding matrilineal practices and marriage sustainability in Ashanti, Ghana; equity/equality, parental care, property, headship/leadership, democracy, and fear, and the outcome of this research will contribute toward addressing the misconceptions. The study discussed an Overview of the Matrilineal Family System, the Biblical Perspective of Family, Marriage Sustainability in Ashanti- Ghana, Pastoral Care Function as a Tool for Interventions, and Previous Studies on the Matrilineal Family System. The study employed descriptive research design of the survey type. The study used interview and questionnaire as instruments for data collection. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used to select three hundred and forty-two (342) respondents as sample for the stuy. The reliability co-efficient value of the questionnaires is 0.88. The study revealed that one of the cultural practices with contrary principles to biblical standards is matrilineal practice. Matrilineal descent is a derivation and genealogical heredity that can be traced through the mother line. The study revealed that Ashanti-Ghana has the highest marriage and divorce rates due to the influences of matrilineal cultural orientation. In the Ashanti family system, extended families are deeply involved in traditional marriage processes, such as decisions on choosing a marriage partner, the rites to legalize marriages and stable marriages. The study revealed that the rule and the transmission of property descent favour females to the female. Matrilineal is seen as a social structure where the power lies in the hands of women’s specific form of inheritance in which families’ property is transmitted through female descent lineage.
