Investigation of Bacteria Associated with Biogas Production Using Vegetables (Telfaira accidentalis and Ocimum gratissimum) Wastes, Banana Peel and Pineapple Peel
Abstract
Abstract This study investigated bacteria associated with biogas production using vegetable (Telfairia accidentalis-futed pumpkin and Ocimum gratissimum – scent leaf) wastes, banana peel and pine apple peel as substrates using small scale digesters. Biogas was produced after 35days. The microorganisms isolated were identified as Bacillus sp, Proteus sp, Clostridium sp, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp, Staphylococcus aureus and Methanogenic bacteria. The total heterotrophic bacteria count (THBC) ranged from 1.05x104 to 3.36x104 . The total colony count (TCC) ranged from 4.9x105 to 6.8x105 for sample 3.1 and 4.0 respectively and 1.02 x106 to 1.89x106 for sample 4.0 and 1.1 respectively. The percentage of occurrence was 20% for only Pseudomonas sp while other microorganisms had percentage occurrence of 10% respectively. The pH and temperature after the process of biogas generation for Methanothrix sochngenii ranged from 7.1 -7.8 at 350C-400C while that of Methanococcoides was 7.0-7.5 and 300C-350C. This research proved that indeed the role of Methanogens and other complimentary bacteria in biogas production is indispensable and the difference in the production of biogas to a large extent depends on the nature of the substrate.
