Design of a Sanitary Landfill for Solid Waste Disposal in Kaduna North Local Government Area of Kaduna State

Abstract

Effective solid waste management is a growing challenge in Kaduna North Local Government, Kaduna State, due to rapid urbanization and increasing waste generation. This study focuses on the design of a sanitary landfill that provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly waste disposal solution for the region. The research involves a comprehensive assessment of current waste generation rates, waste composition, recoverable materials and disposal methods. The landfill design incorporated key engineering parameters such as landfill capacity, liner systems to prevent groundwater contamination, a leachate collection system and final cover systems to prevent water infiltration to reduce environmental hazards. The findings indicate that the landfill will effectively manage solid waste for a 20-year lifespan, with a capacity of 4,155,985.3 m³ and an area of 673,920 m². The amount of solid waste generated was determined to be 3379 tons/day. The amount of recoverable material was determined to be 884.6 ton/day. The size of the landfill area was determined to be 673,920 m2. The leachate collection and storage facility were designed with a dimension of 1.86 x 1.86 x 2 m, an area of 3.72 m2, and a volume of 7.44 m3. A liner system was designed at the base and sides of the landfill. A final cover was designed at the top of the landfill. The design also ensures environmental protection using a composite liner system, efficient leachate collection, and a final cover system that supports vegetation and minimizes infiltration.
