Causes and Consequences of Insecurities in Nigeria: Implications for Guidance
Abstract
This study examined the Causes and Consequences of Insecurities in Nigeria: Implications for Guidance. Descriptive survey research was employed for this study. The target population was the university undergraduates in Nigeria. The stratified random sampling technique was used to select three hundred (300) respondents for the study. Instrument Causes and Consequences of Insecurities Questionnaire (CCI-Q) was used to collect data for the study. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count, percentages, mean score, and standard deviation were used to analyse the research questions while inferential statistical tools such as t-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significant. The study revealed that social media, illiteracy, poverty, corruption, lack of personnel welfare and ignorance are some of the causes of insecurities in Nigeria with no gender disparities. The study also revealed that substance abuse, child abuse, harmful widowhood practices, early marriages, low school enrolment, juvenile delinquency and school dropout are some of the consequences of insecurities in Nigeria and has no location disparities. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that even though there are no gender disparities in causes of insecurities in Nigeria, counselling should ensure that interventions are inclusive, addressing the specific needs of both men and women. The study also recommended that the Government and NGOs should promote mass literacy campaigns and awareness programmes, especially in rural areas, to counter ignorance and reduce vulnerability to insecurity.
