Status of Solid Waste Management in Unguwan Dosa Ward in Kaduna

Abstract

Waste management (WM) is a critical global concern, intensifying with rising urban populations and the escalating volume of municipal solid waste (MSW). According to the World Bank, 2.01 billion metric tonnes of MSW are generated annually, with over 33% managed unsafely. Most low and middle-income countries still rely on open dumping and landfills, while high-income nations utilize more sanitary methods like recycling and incineration. Nigeria, like many developing countries, faces significant challenges in solid waste management due to ineffective policies, lack of community engagement, and limited formal recycling infrastructure. This study investigates the current waste management practices in Unguwan Dosa, Kaduna, looking into the population demographics, current waste handling behaviours, and the roles of informal waste collectors and government agencies. A sample size of 200 respondents was determined using statistical methods at a 95% confidence level. Findings revealed that while 60.5% of households used waste collection services, most of these were informal and often resorted to improper disposal methods, such as open dumping and burning. Waste segregation was minimal, with 79.5% of respondents not separating their waste. Most residents lacked access to municipal waste transportation services, and only 35% had designated waste disposal sites nearby. Spatial mapping confirmed that formal collection occurred exclusively along College Road, with all other areas unserved, and several illegal dump sites and a transfer station were identified. Awareness and participation in waste management were limited, with less than half familiar with the "3Rs" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), although 91.5% acknowledged improper waste disposal as a serious issue and expressed willingness to pay for improved services.
