Risk Factors of Trichomoniasis and Prevalence Among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinic in Okene, Kogi State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence and socio-demographic risk factors of Trichomonas vaginalis infection among pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic at Obangede Specialist Hospital in Okene Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional design was employed, with data collected from 170 pregnant women using structured questionnaires and laboratory analysis of high vaginal swabs via wet mount microscopy. The results revealed a Trichomonas vaginalis prevalence rate of 20.0%, indicating that one in five pregnant women in the study population was infected. Significant associations were found between infection and younger age (<20 years), single marital status, and lower education levels (none/primary). Behavioral factors such as multiple sexual partners and vaginal douching were also linked to higher infection rates. These findings underscore the public health burden of trichomoniasis in the region and highlight the need for targeted interventions, including routine antenatal screening, health education, and policy reforms to mitigate adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. The study contributes to localized data on Trichomonas vaginalis epidemiology and advocates for integrated STI management in antenatal care programs in resource-limited settings.
