Abstract

This study presents the design of a water distribution network for Kafur Local Government Area (LGA) using WaterGEMS software, a powerful tool for water distribution system modeling and analysis. The design aims to provide a reliable and efficient water supply system that meets the needs of the growing population. The study achieved three main objectives: (1) designing a water distribution network using WaterGEMS, considering factors such as topography, population density, and water demand; (2) evaluating the performance of the designed network in terms of pressure, flow rate, and velocity; and (3) providing recommendations for implementation and maintenance. The population of Kafur LGA was projected from 2020 to 2030, with 2020 as the base year, 2025 as the intermediate year, and 2030 as the projected year. The Thiessen polygon method was used to assign demand at each node. The design considered various parameters, including elevation, hydraulic grade, pressure, and pipe flow characteristics. The results indicate that the designed network performs well, with pressure values ranging from acceptable to high, particularly in areas with high population density. For instance, a pressure of 708 kPa at a demand of 49 L/s with an elevation of 587.09 m indicates a highly populated area. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of WaterGEMS software in designing and analyzing water distribution networks. The findings provide valuable insights for water utility managers, engineers, and policymakers to plan, implement, and maintain efficient water distribution systems in Kafur LGA and similar areas.
