Designing for Multi-Functionality in Sports Facilities: Strategies for Flexibility and Adaptability in University Athletic Spaces
Abstract
As universities continue to expand and diversify their athletic programs, the demand for sports facilities that are both versatile and adaptable has become increasingly important. This study examined design strategies that support multi-functionality in sports facilities, specifically focusing on flexibility and adaptability within university athletic settings. Using Rivers State University as a case study, the research examined how contemporary architectural approaches can facilitate the dynamic use of space to accommodate a range of sports and physical activities within a single facility. The methodology combined a literature review, user surveys, and spatial analysis to identify core design principles that allow for rapid reconfiguration without compromising performance or user experience. Key strategies include modular layouts, movable equipment, retractable partitions, and hybrid zones that seamlessly support multiple functions. The findings highlight how flexible spatial planning can improve long-term usability, efficiency, and relevance in university sports environments. In addition to identifying design principles, the research also considered the operational and planning implications of implementing adaptable sports spaces. This includes considerations such as scheduling, maintenance, circulation flow, and user management in multi-use environments. The study emphasises the importance of stakeholder input, particularly from students, coaches, and facility managers, in shaping responsive and user- centred design solutions. By proposing a responsive design framework grounded in user needs and architectural practice, this paper contributes to ongoing discussions on adaptive sports facilities design.
