Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Addressing Addiction

Osei Rhodolf Donkor

Abstract

Addiction remains a pervasive and complex challenge affecting individuals across all demographics and cultures. This paper explores the application of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as a comprehensive treatment strategy for addressing various forms of addiction. Beginning with an introduction to the concept and categories of addiction, ranging from substance abuse to behavioural dependencies, the paper delves into the underlying causative and risk factors contributing to addictive behaviours. It also offers a unique perspective by examining addiction through a biblical lens, highlighting spiritual and moral dimensions often overlooked in clinical settings. The paper's core provides an in-depth overview of CBT, outlining its foundational principles, goals, and therapeutic techniques tailored to addiction treatment. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of CBT in modifying maladaptive thoughts and behaviours, enhancing coping strategies, and promoting long-term recovery. The paper concludes by affirming the efficacy of CBT as a structured, evidence-based approach that addresses both the psychological and behavioural aspects of addiction, making it a vital component in holistic addiction treatment frameworks.
