Relationship Between Theology and Culture and Its Implications for Contemporary Christians

Edward Inem Onyeije

Abstract

Theology is the study about God, His love and plans for humanity and the universe. Conversely, culture is the people’s way of life, which encompasses their philosophy, ideology, worldview, nutrition, language, clothing, songs, dance, tradition, occupations and all activities they are known for. Theology needs to be integrated with culture for greater advantage. Theology shapes cultural norms, values and practices to correspond with biblical truths. Reversely, cultures influence theology, establishing it in specific context for effective comprehension and application. Bible unfolds the inclusion of culture in theological formation in creation, incarnation, great commission, Pentecostal experience and in Apostle Paul’s mission strategy. Any theological formation that isolates culture is viewed superficial. Every culture is intended to fulfil God’s purpose, which is the actual reason theology is rooted in culture. Cultures opposing God deviate from their intended purpose and should be reevaluated.
