GIS Mapping of BIR Levels of Hydrocarbon-Impacted Areas as a Prelude to the Remediation Process in Obi-Ayagha, Delta State
Abstract
The study aimed at GIS Mapping of BIR Levels of Hydrocarbon Impacted Areas as A Prelude to Remediation Process in Obi-Ayagha, Delta State, Nigeria was carried using a portable Nuclear Radiation Monitors (Gamma Scout) and Global Positioning System (GPS). The measured Background Ionizing Radiation (BIR) BIR exposure rate ranged from 0.012 mRh-1 to 0.016 mRh- 1 with a mean value of 0.014±0.00099 mRh-1 in the study area. The values of the background ionizing radiation (BIR) are above the standard value as stipulated by UNSCEAR, (2000). The calculated Equivalent Dose Rate (EDR) in the study area ranged from 1.01 mSvy-1 to 1.35 mSvy-1 with a mean value of 1.19±0.08284 mSvy-1. These dose rates arising from BIR exposure in the studied locations are far higher than the recommended safe limit of 1 mSvy-1 (UNSCEAR, 2002). The calculated absorbed dose rate for the study area ranged from 104.4?Gyh-1 to 139.2?Gyh-1 with a mean value of 122.36±8.68127 ?Gyh-1. These dose rates arising from BIR exposure in the studied locations are far higher than the recommended safe limit of 84.0?Gyh-1 (UNSCEAR, 2021). The calculated values of AEDE ranged from 128.04 mSvy-1 to 170.71 mSvy-1 with an average value of 150.07±10.64509 mSvy-1. These annual effective doses are higher than world average value of 70 (mSvy-1) This implies that the studied location may be radiologically contaminated due to the illegal refining of crude oil that was taking place in the study area. The values obtained for the study area ranged from 0.448 to 0.597 with an average value of 0.525±0.03727×10-3. The values obtained, are higher than the world average value of 0.29×10-3. This high value for excess lifetime cancer risk indicates that there exist the possibilities of cancer development by residents who wish to spend all their lifetime in the area.
