Effect of Visual Colour-Coded Graph Instructional Materials on Students’ Academic Achievement in Algebraic Graphs in Oyo Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract

The persistent decline in students’ performance in Mathematics, particularly in algebraic graphs, as evident in the WAEC Chief Examiners’ Reports, is a cause for concern. This has been largely attributed to unsuitable teaching techniques used for teaching such concepts. Based on this notion, this study investigated the Effect of Visual Colour-coded Graph Instructional Materials on Students’ Academic Achievement in Algebraic Graphs in Oyo Metropolis, Nigeria. A pretest- posttest quasi experimental design was employed involving a sample of 83 SS2 students from the total population of SS2 students where six schools were sampled through multistage sampling technique using 6 intact classes to capture the moderating effect of school type in the study. Data collection was done through Algebraic Graph Achievement Test (AGAT) and analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA)(KR-20 = 0.82). The result revealed a significant effect of colour-coded graph (F(1, 82) = 155.983, p < 0.000); but no significant effect based on school type (F(1, 82) = 2.127, p > 0.05), indicating synergistic effects moderated by school type.
