Audiovisual and Classroom Instructional Materials and Academic Achievement in Basic Science Among Primary School Pupils’ in Akamkpa Local Government Area
Abstract
This study examined the relationship between effective utilization of audiovisual as instructional materials and academic achievement in Basic Science among primary school pupils in Akamkpa. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of 100 Basic Science teachers and 2,008 primary five pupils in Akampka Local Government area of Cross River State. The study sample consist of 200 primary five pupils and 40 basic science teachers. Two instruments were used for data collection in this study. These include a 15-item questionnaire titled Instructional material and Pupils Academic Performance in Basic Science Questionnaire (TMPAPCSQ) and 40 items Basic Science Achievement Test BSAT. The Pearson product moment correlation analysis was employed to test the hypotheses under study at .05 level of significance and 198 degrees of freedom. The result of the analysis revealed that, all the variables of instructional material have a significant relationship with pupils’ academic performance in basic science among primary school pupils in Akamkpa local government area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended among that other teachers in primary schools in Akamkpa should incorporate audiovisual instructional materials into their teaching practices to enhance pupils' academic performance in Basic Science. This can be achieved by providing regular training and support for teachers on the effective use of audiovisual materials in the classroom.
