Accessing Public Perception of Cyber Security Risks and Awareness in Kogi Central Senatorial District, Kogi State, Nigeria

Abstract

The adoption of technology in Nigeria in various aspects ranging from education to economy, security, power, financial institution e.t.c. has made her one of the fastest developing countries in Africa. Kogi state is one of the many states in Nigeria that is also not lagging behind in the use of technology. However, cyber security presents great challenges to the evolving information society and economy, it is one major problem faced by almost every individual and organizations that has bank account, email address, social media account or does any form of transaction online. On this note, cyber security is defined as a set of technologies, processes and practices designed to protect networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access, in conformity with the common information security goals, the protection of confidentiality, integrity and availability of information. The variety and complexity of cyber security attacks that have evolved, equals the variety and complexity of the information technologies that have been deployed. Physical and syntactic attacks operate totally within the underlying structure of the computing infrastructures. Once access is gained, any number of undesired activities by the attacker is possible. This study seeks to access the public’s perception on cyber security risk and awareness in Kogi central area of Kogi state. The systematic literature review method was used to review relevant publications from reputable journals and conferences. Also, a primary investigative data collection and analysis technique will be adopted through questionnaire administration to selected informants from the relevant agencies including conversations with security personnel, academics, members of private institutions and businesses, government agencies, students and the general public on personal perception and general knowledge on Cyber Security.
