Uzoma Hyacinth Nwauzor

Abstract

Mental health disorders have become a significant concern globally affecting individuals of all ages and background. Nigeria like many other countries faces the burden of mental health problems with reported prevalence of 20-30% cases among the population. However, due to limited access to mental health services, stigma and cultural beliefs, many patients do not seek professional help and instead they resort to alternative treatment. The integration of music therapy into primary health care services will be a viable tool in meeting with the demands of patients. This study will examine reasons why mental problems are on the increase and the need for using music therapy as accessible intervention in north central Nigeria. Music therapy has shown promises in addressing mental health problems. If properly managed, music therapy can help to relieve physical and mental tension. It has solved mental issues that have to do with evil spirit, grief and deaths. Music is effective and works to ameliorate the suffering of patients with mental disorders. This study is crucial in establishing how music therapy could be implemented effectively in contributing to a more acceptable approach to mental health solutions. Results have shown that music therapy is a relevant approach to treat mental problems; if it is effective then its efficacy cannot be taken for granted. It concludes with recommendations on how music is needed to harness an emerging service in the promotion of mental health in Nigeria. The advocacy for the use of music therapy in treating mental health cases in north central Nigeria should contribute to a holistic and acceptable approach to the wellness of patients.
