Smart Home Technologies and Domestic Security: A Study of Home Economics Students' Awareness and Perceptions

Abstract

This study adopted a correlational research designed to investigate Smart Home Technologies and Domestic Security: A Study of Home Economics Students' Awareness and Perceptions. The study was carried out at Delta State, Nigeria. The population of the study is 208 home economics students from College of Education Agbor and Delta State College of Education Mosogar. A sample of 104 students was used for the study. The instrument used to collect data was a structured questionnaire titled Smart Home Technologies and Domestic Security: A Study of Home Economics Students' Awareness and Perceptions (SHTDSSHESAP) with 15 items. Content validity was used for the study and reliability coefficient of 0.68 was obtained. Mean and Standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while Z-test was used to answer the hypotheses. The study found that home economics students regularly read or hear about smart home technologies through media or classroom discussions and that they are familiar with the concept of smart home technologies. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that educational institutions, particularly Colleges of Education, should incorporate topics on smart home technologies and digital security into the Home Economics curriculum.
