Hermeneutical Study of 1 Samuel 2:12-17, 27-30 and Its Implication in Counselling Contemporary Youth on Morality

Dr Ochenia Faith Opade, Taiwo Oluwadamilola Ayeni

Abstract

The escalating moral decline within our society poses a grave concern, particularly evident among the younger generation. This deterioration permeates the very core of our future leaders, eroding their potential to positively impact the world. Contemporary youth are often characterized by traits such as greed, rebellion, lust, dishonesty, ungodly passions, sexual perversion, and involvement in cultism. Additionally, many are unaware of the repercussions their actions have on themselves, others, and their spiritual connection. Consumed by pleasure-seeking pursuits, they remain oblivious to the profound losses incurred and God's divine plans for them. Therefore, it is imperative to provide guidance and instruction to steer them away from this detrimental path and towards a more wholesome lifestyle conducive to their future achievements. Counsellors and lay ministers dedicated to youth outreach play a pivotal role in addressing the multifaceted challenges confronting today's youth. Positioned strategically, they can impart biblical truths regarding the consequences of sinful behaviour and emphasize the importance of embracing Christ's teachings. This study examined the concepts of morality and moral decay among contemporary youth, explored the role of youth counsellors and Christian counselling, conducted an exegetical analysis of 1 Samuel 2:12-17, 27-30, and elucidated the implications of 1 Samuel 2:11-36 in counselling modern youth on morality. The study posits that the Bible underscores the significance of instilling godly principles in children from a young age so that they may adhere to them as they mature Youth counsellors possess the capacity to guide contemporary youth away from temporal and eternal judgment by imparting biblical wisdom and enlightening them about the repercussions of sin. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, counsellors can lead them towards embracing the salvation offered through Christ Jesus.
