Christians' Response Towards Adolescents’ Unethical Sexual Activities in Ogbomoso

Job Oluremi Okunoye, PhD, Michael Damilare Osunleye

Abstract

Teenage sexuality has emerged as a critical concern in contemporary society due to its far- reaching socio-ethical, psychological, and spiritual implications. While sexual activity is a natural aspect of human development, it becomes problematic when adolescents, often lacking adequate education, guidance, or awareness, engage in such behaviours without understanding the potential consequences for their mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. It is so pathetic that Christian teenagers, including those assumed to uphold principles of sexual purity, have become involved in unethical sexual practices that contravene societal norms and Christian moral expectations. This study, using a qualitative approach, explores the growing trend of unethical sexual behaviour among adolescents in Ogbomoso (the host community of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology) and examines the diverse responses from the Christian community. It highlights the efforts of Christian institutions and individuals in addressing this issue through biblical teaching, moral instruction, counseling, and spiritual mentorship. The research further investigates the root causes of these behaviours and evaluates the effectiveness of Christian responses in mitigating their impact. By integrating both academic insight and faith-based perspectives, this work contributes to the broader discourse on the role of religion in shaping adolescent sexual ethics and promoting holistic youth development in alignment with Christian values.
