Assessment of the Use and Practice of Family Planning Methods Among Women in Kaduna North Local Government Area, Kaduna, Nigeria.
Abstract
This paper examines the use and practice of family planning methods among women in Kaduna North Local Government Area. Purposive sampling method was used in the research. Miller and Brewer (2003) sample size determination method was used to determine the sample size of 400 respondents. 367 questionnaires were returned out of 400 which is 92% response rate. Data was analyzed using linear regression analysis and in-depth interview was conducted to support the quantitative data. The findings reveal that, there is a very high correlation coefficient (R=0.941) indicating a strong positive linear relationship between the factors and the practice of family planning methods. The study identified six factors that influence the use of family planning methods which are lack of knowledge of where to seek health assistance (p = .006), religious/cultural prohibition (p = .002), fear of side effects (p = .002), lack of knowledge about family planning methods (p = .003) was another significant predictor. Number of children (p = .001) was a significant predictor of non-use. Finally, fear of difficulty/delay in getting pregnant after using family planning methods (p = .013). The study also found that religious and cultural prohibition, fear of side effects and fear of delay in getting pregnancy after using family planning methods were significant factors that affect the use of family planning, therefore, it is recommended that efforts from the ministry of health and relevant NGO’s to engage religious and traditional leaders to promote family planning practices as well as counseling and education programs to address the fear and misconceptions about family planning practices.
