Factors Affecting the Rate of Fuel Consumption in Magogoni Ferry Operations

Hamza Ally Mwapili, Dr Werneld E Ngongi, and Geophrey Damson

Abstract

Fuel consumption is a major concern in ferry operations due to increasing fuel prices and the need to reduce environmental impact. This study looks into the main factors that influence how much fuel is used by the Magogoni Ferry, which operates between Magogoni and Kigamboni in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Using data collected over three months, we examined how engine speed (RPM), passenger numbers, cargo weight, and other conditions affect fuel usage. The results from the regression analysis show that engine RPM, the number of passengers, and the amount of cargo are the most important factors. The model used was able to explain 75.5% of the variation in fuel use. These findings can help ferry operators improve efficiency and reduce costs.
