Technical and Cost Benefit Analysis of Directly Coupled Solar PV Water Pumping System for a Rural Community

Chizindu Stanley Esobinenwu

Abstract

This paper presents a technical and cost benefit analysis of a directly coupled solar PV water pumping system in Ibaa community in River’s state, Nigeria. The data of daily water needed by each household in the community were obtained through the use of interview. The system is adequately sized such that the solar pump requirement is in tandem with PV system of the study area. A suitable submersible pump of 1400W power rating with discharge rate of 4m3/h was considered for this project. The number of solar panels calculated is 38, depth of borehole selected is 50m, and tank storage of 45,000 litres capacity was determined. The economic assessment of the system, which includes cost of cubic meter of water and system cost in annual basis were also determined. The result reveals that the unit cost per cubic meter of water per day reduces from N40.492 for the 1st and N25.578 for 10th year. Also, the system cost decreases from N6, 584,900 in the 1st year to N4, 159.487 in the 10th year. The maximum power, voltage and the efficiency of the PV module selected for the study are 250 W, 31.9 V and 17.7%. From the result obtained, it is opined that the proposed system has huge cost benefits, it is more cost effective than the conventional public utility water corporation in Nigeria, this, can be used as template for understanding proper planning of water supply system for rural or remote communities.
