Safety Incidents Among Workers in Oil and Gas Downstream Companies in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated the appraisal of safety incidents among workers in selected oil and gas downstream companies in Port Harcourt metropolis. The study design was a descriptive survey design and study population consisted of 1500 workers oil and gas downstream companies in Port Harcourt. A non-stratified sampling method was used in selecting the sample of the study which consisted of 340 workers. A self- structured questionnaire was the instrument of the study. The study found that 56% of the respondents were 25-30 years old, 28% were 31 – 35 years old, 14% were 36 – 40 years old while 2% were 41 years old above, 78% of the respondents were males while 22% were females. The study further revealed that the types of safety incidents that were common among workers in oil and gas downstream companies in Port Harcourt metropolis includes truck tanker accident in transit, Truck tanker accident within the terminal or station etc and that the injuries that are common in oil and gas downstream companies in Port Harcourt metropolis includes back injury (ergonomic), sprain of a limb etc. The study concluded that workers at different levels in the Port Harcourt metropolis oil and gas downstream sector experienced safety incidents. Therefore, the study recommended that companies particularly, petroleum products retailers should commit to developing sound HSE culture among workers by way of robust HSE policies and personnel training programs. These programs would address both unsafe practices and unsafe situations.
