Development of a Prototype Fingerprint Attendance Register Device
Abstract
This study presents the design and implementation of a fingerprint-based attendance register system developed for use in academic institutions. The project aims to replace the conventional manual attendance process with a secure, efficient biometric solution. The prototype integrates a fingerprint sensor module (R305), an ATmega8 microcontroller, a 4x3 matrix keypad, and an LCD interface. A sample of 35 students from the College of Education, Katsina-Ala participated in the system’s testing phase. Results showed a recognition accuracy of 97%, with an average authentication time of approximately 20 seconds per user. The system eliminates common issues associated with traditional attendance methods, such as impersonation and forgery, by requiring students to be physically present. Findings suggest the proposed system can significantly improve the reliability of attendance tracking in educational environments, especially in low-resource settings. Future improvements are recommended to expand database storage, add backup power, and integrate cloud connectivity.
