Abstract

This paper examines the critical role of renewable energy in promoting sustainable energy governance and mitigating climate change in Nigeria. As one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters in Africa, Nigeria's dependence on fossil fuels contributes significantly to environmental degradation, energy insecurity, and economic instability. Despite the potential for abundant renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass, the adoption of renewable energy technologies remains hindered by weak regulatory frameworks, inconsistent policies, and insufficient infrastructure. Using secondary research and qualitative content analysis, this study analyzes Nigeria's energy landscape, existing policies, and governance structures. It underscores the importance of integrating renewable energy into the national energy mix. The paper argues that the successful transition to a sustainable energy system requires strengthened policy enforcement, enhanced financial mechanisms, and strategic public- private partnerships. The findings emphasize the need for comprehensive climate policies, including emission reduction strategies, promotion of clean energy technologies, and sustainable urban development practices, to ensure a resilient and low-carbon future for Nigeria. Ultimately, the research concludes that fostering renewable energy adoption is essential to achieving sustainable development, enhancing energy security, and meeting Nigeria's climate commitments.
