Assessment of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Strategies for the Management of Federal Polytechnics in North-East Nigeria

Lamuwa Yaya Aliyu, Lamido Muhammad Hammaiyo

Abstract

The financial sustainability of Federal Polytechnics in North-East Nigeria has become a critical issue due to fluctuating government allocations and increasing operational costs. This study assesses the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) strategies employed by these institutions, evaluating their effectiveness in ensuring financial stability and improved service delivery. The study explores various IGR sources, including tuition fees, consultancy services, commercial ventures, research grants, and partnerships with private organizations. It also identifies key challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor financial management, policy constraints, and resistance to revenue diversification. Using a mixed-methods approach, data is collected from administrative staff, financial officers, and policymakers in selected polytechnics through surveys and interviews. The findings reveal that while IGR has contributed significantly to institutional funding, its full potential remains untapped due to inefficiencies and external constraints. The study recommends policy reforms, enhanced financial management practices, and the adoption of innovative revenue-generation models to improve sustainability. These insights will aid in formulating strategic frameworks for optimizing IGR in Federal Polytechnics across the region.
