Assessment of Nigerian Technical Colleges Woodwork Students’ Skill Acquisition Using Task and Project-Based Instructional Methods

Ezekiel E. Udo, PhD

Abstract

The research assessed the impact of task-based and project-based instructional methods on the acquisition of woodworking skills among students in Technical Colleges in the South-South region of Nigeria. To address this, the study formulated two research questions and two hypotheses. It employed a quasi-experimental design involving both pre-test and post-test control groups. The study population consisted of 102 General Woodwork (GW) students enrolled in public Technical Colleges during the 2020/21 academic session in the study area. A purposive sampling technique was utilized to select all 102 GW students, with 48 students selected using simple random sampling technique to the experimental group and 54 to the control group, from six Technical Colleges. The tool for data collection was Machine Woodwork Skills Acquisition Evaluation Checklist (MWSAEC) developed by the researcher. To ensure the validity of the instruments, three technical teacher education lecturers and one lecturer in Measurement and Evaluation reviewed the instrument, and their suggested corrections were incorporated into the final instrument used in the study. The instrument's reliability was established at a coefficient of .83 using Kuder Richardson’s formula 21 (KR-21). Mean and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used for data analysis in testing of null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study among
