Abstract
This study aims at exploring the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants, emphasis on bitter leaf in disease management in Kogi central senatorial districts in Kogi state. The specific objectives in this study are: to document and analyze the traditional uses of medicinal plants, with a specific focus on bitter leaf, for disease management in Kogi State, to conduct a comprehensive phytochemical analysis of bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) cultivated in Kogi State to identify key bioactive compounds, to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of selected communities in Kogi State regarding the therapeutic application of bitter leaf in disease management. The study adopted a mixed-method approach, including questionnaires, semi-structured interview and laboratory studies to collect Data. The sample consisted of five selected local government area, in Kogi State. Descriptive statistics was conducted to analyze the data. The findings showed that the review provides a compiled information about VAβs therapeutic role, nutritional and phytochemical makeup, and the pharmacological characteristics of its isolated compounds. Its chemical and nutritional content offers significant promise for the prevention and treatment of numerous illnesses. The study recommends the integration of standardized bitter leaf preparations into complementary medicine, particularly in rural healthcare settings and encourage sustainable harvesting practices and emphasize the importance of appropriate preparation methods.
