Drug Abuse and Mental Health Among Secondary School Students in Uyo Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State

Abstract


This study was carried out on drug abuse and mental health among secondary school students in Uyo Senatorial district of Akwa Ibom State. In order to achieve this purpose, five research questions were raised and the corresponding five null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The descriptive research design was used for the study. The population of the study was Twenty One Thousand Six Hundred And Forty Nine (21649), students in Uyo Senatorial Districts of Akwa Ibom State. Purposive sampling technique was used to select S.S.1 students. The instrument was faced validated, A reliability coefficient of 0.78, 0.82 and 0.98 was obtained for the instrument using Cronbach Alpha reliability test method. The descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation, frequency, and simple percentages was used to answer the research question raised while t-test statistics, Z-test, pie-chart and Bar- chart were to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed that there is a significant influence of alcohol consumption on mental health among students. Smoking have a significant influence on mental health among students. There is a significant influence of marijuana on mental health among students. The result showed that there is a significant influence of non-chemical use of medication on mental health among students. The result equally showed that there is a significant influence of hallucinogens on mental health among students, in secondary schools in Uyo Senatorial Districts of Akwa Ibom State. The study therefore, recommends that; Government at all level should evaluate the effectiveness of existing intervention programs targeted at mitigating the negative influence of drugs abuse on mental health.
