Self-Rated Health and Activities of Daily Living as Predictors of Mental Health Literacy Among Undergraduate Students of Benue State University Makurdi

Abstract


This study investigated Self-Rated Health and Activities of Daily Living as Predictors of Mental Health Literacy among undergraduate students of Benue State University Makurdi. The Cross- sectional survey design was employed where Three Hundred and Fifteen (315) respondents consisting of 147 (46.67%) males and 168 (53.33%) females. Their ages ranged from 19-48years with a mean age of 32.01(SD=6.93). Accidental sampling was used to draw samples for the study. Three instruments were used for data collection; The General Health Questionnaire, Physical Self Maintenance Scale and the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire. Three hypotheses were tested using Hierarchical Regression. Findings indicated that after controlling for demographic variables, Self-rated Health was a significant predictor of Mental Health Literacy among undergraduate students of Benue State University Makurdi. Secondly, Activities of Daily Living significantly predicted Mental Health Literacy among undergraduate students. Lastly, Self-rated Health and Activities of Daily Living jointly predicted Mental Health Literacy among undergraduate students of Benue State University Makurdi. It was recommended that the university management should make room for the teaching of Mental Health Literacy as a general course. This will give students the knowledge to understand themselves and employ health-seeking behaviours when necessary.
