Socio-Demographic Determinants of Marital Happiness Among Couples in Rural Farming Households of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract


Objective: The study ascertained the socio-demographic determinants of marital happiness among couples in rural farming households of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Research Design: Survey Research Design. Place and Duration: The study was conducted in rural areas of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria from 2021 – 2023. Sample and Method: A questionnaire, with items covering the research objectives of the study, was administered to 180 married couples selected using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Results: Results of data, analyzed using descriptive statistics and Probit regression, indicate that 57.8% of the respondents were females, 95.0% had formal education, and 66.7% were married for more than ten years. Findings further reveal that majority of the respondents were happily married; and Probit regression result reveal that their educational status, employment status, monthly income, household size, number of children, self-reported health status and satisfaction with housing conditions were significant determinants of their marital happiness status. Recommendation: It is recommended that the Government of Akwa Ibom State create more employment opportunities for people in rural areas of Akwa Ibom State since employment status significantly influence marital happiness in the study.
